Testing and Tagging

Electrical safety is paramount in any workplace setting. Regular inspection and testing of electrical appliances help prevent accidents, injuries, and property damage caused by faulty equipment. Compliance with AS 3760 ensures that electrical appliances are safe to use and operate efficiently, reducing the risk of electrical hazards.

AS/NZS 3760 Compliance: According to WHS Regulations 2022, a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) at a workplace must ensure that electrical equipment is regularly inspected and tested by a competent person if the equipment meets the following criteria:

• Supplied with electricity through an electrical socket outlet.
• Used in an environment exposing the equipment to operating conditions likely to result in damage or reduced lifespan.

Operating conditions that may lead to damage or reduced lifespan include:

• Exposure to moisture.
• Heat.
• Vibration.
• Mechanical damage.
• Corrosive chemicals.
• Dust.

Testing Procedures: Testing and tagging should be performed by a competent person following these procedures:

1. Visual Inspection: Examine the appliance for any visible signs of damage, wear, or deterioration.
2. Electrical Tests: Conduct electrical tests using specialized Portable Appliance Tester to assess the safety and performance of the appliance.
3. Tagging: Affix a durable tag to the appliance indicating the test date, next test due date, and the name of the tester.

The frequency of testing depends on the type of workplace and the environment in which the electrical equipment is used. Generally, testing intervals range from three months to five years, as specified in AS 3760.
